Dr. Michael Chua is the feature for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. He is the owner and operator of GeriHab Physical Therapy located in Jackson, Tenn.
As a physical therapist, Dr. Chua specializes in treating patients in home health, skilled nursing facilities and acute care hospitals. His clinical practice covers pain management, geriatrics and dementia management. Additionally, he is a certified dementia practitioner.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia affects 55 million people worldwide.
Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia according to WHO.
Dr. Chua offers a course on dementia entitled: ‘MisUnderstanding Dementia.’
In the course preview, he explains the difference between the ‘normal aging process’ and when dementia is causing 'brain damage.'
His desire to help others is one of his reasons for becoming an entrepreneur.
"Helping seniors get better and to live life to the fullest," said Dr. Chua.
The everyday challenges of running and managing a business can be daunting.
Dr. Chua relies on his 'family and the bigger purpose of serving the seniors and geriatric population,' to stay motivated.
His advice to new entrepreneurs is an acronym for MENTOR and the comments below:
M - Meet a Need
E - Educate, Empower and Equip
N - Network
T - Team
O - One-on-One Coaching
R - Repeat
"Meet a need in your community and go from there. Then you educate yourself about it, empower people on you(r) calling and then equip yourself and the people you are educating. Then you network with same and like minded people. Choose people who will bring out the best in you. Then find a team of winners. You need to hire and train only the best. Then get a one on one coach, a consultant and a MENTOR. Then you repeat all these processes."
